Thai turbine failure sparks Vestas probe
Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas has launched an investigation into the failure of a wind turbine in Thailand.
Vestas said a nacelle detached from the tower and fell to the ground together with the blades at one of the company’s V136, 3MW machines at Wind Energy Holding’s 60-turbine T2 and T3 wind farm in Nakhon Ratchasima and Chaiyaphum provinces.
The incident happened at 11.30am local time on 30 October, the company said. It added that no one was injured and no other turbines were damaged.
“The surrounding area has been secured and Vestas technicians and experts are together with the customer, Wind Energy Holding Group, at the site and have begun investigating the cause of the incident,” Vestas said in a statement.
“Both Vestas and Wind Energy Holding Group take safety and quality very seriously and as a standard precautionary measure, the wind park’s remaining 59 wind turbines have been stopped,” the company said.
Vestas added that it would not speculate about the cause and or comment further until preliminary findings are available.
TV pictures have shown a wrecked turbine at the foot of a relatively unscathed tower. The towers, with a hub height of 157 metres, are among the highest in the region to date.
The project has only very recently been completed and commissioned.
Vestas was contracted last year to supply and install the turbines as well as providing a 15-year Active Output Management 4000 service contract in which the manufacturer guarantees a defined high level of availability and performance.
It also includes Vestasonline Business, the Danish company’s unique SCADA system for data-driven monitoring and preventive maintenance.
